A Day in Bangalow: Boutique Shopping, Great Food and Hinterland Charm
Bangalow is the kind of place you visit for a quick coffee and end up staying all day. This small hinterland village, just 30 minutes north of Ballina, has quietly become one of the Northern Rivers’ most loved destinations, and it is not hard to see why.
Set among rolling green hills, macadamia orchards and subtropical rainforest, Bangalow has managed to hold onto its heritage character while building a reputation for exceptional food, independent boutiques and one of the best monthly markets in the region. It is the only intact Federation village on Australia’s east coast, and the wide main street lined with verandah-fronted buildings is genuinely beautiful.
Where to Eat and Drink
For a village of fewer than 5,000 people, Bangalow punches well above its weight when it comes to food.
Woods is tucked just off the main street and has built a loyal following for its relaxed hinterland atmosphere and seriously good menu. The savoury crumpets have something of a cult status. Great coffee, too.
You Beauty, by pioneering no-waste chef Matt Stone, is a European-style bistro with a strong farm-to-table philosophy. It is just around the corner from his woodfired pizza and pasta bar, Ciao Mate!, which is perfect for a more casual meal.
Bangalow Hotel is worth a stop for anyone who appreciates a good country pub. The outdoor eating area is great for a lazy afternoon, and the meals are hearty and made with local produce. You will likely end up chatting with a local or two.
Butcher Baker is a solid choice for coffee and a bite in the heart of the main street, while Common People Brewing offers craft beers brewed by a crew of Northern Rivers locals.
If you have time for a short drive, the tiny village of Newrybar is about ten minutes south and home to The Little General, a popular spot for breakfast, great coffee and local produce.

Shopping the Main Street
Bangalow’s main street is dotted with independent boutiques and homewares stores that feel a world away from chain retail. A few highlights:
Island Luxe stocks covetable homewares and furniture with a Nordic-inspired aesthetic. Johansen is a women’s fashion boutique with an earthy, considered palette. Wax Jumbu Emporium covers everything from clothing and jewellery to locally crafted crockery. And Our Corner Store is a beautifully curated shop stocking simple, elegant pieces for the home and garden.
There is also Red Ginger, a store that would not look out of place in downtown Shanghai, stocked with Oriental objects, teas and ceramics.

Bangalow Markets
If you can time your visit right, the Bangalow Market is held on the fourth Sunday of every month at the tree-lined Bangalow Showground. It is a brilliant gathering of bakers, makers, farmers, viticulturists and artisans, with seasonal produce, handmade crafts, sustainable fashion and plenty of street food. It is one of the best markets in the Northern Rivers and a great way to spend a Sunday morning.
The Bangalow Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning on Byron Street, with fresh seasonal produce direct from local growers. Entry is free.
Exploring the Surrounds
Bangalow sits in the Byron Bay hinterland, surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the region. The drive up from Ballina takes you through rolling green hills and past macadamia plantations, and the village of Federal, about 15 minutes further into the hinterland, is worth a detour for its relaxed community vibe and the popular Federal Doma Cafe.
For history lovers, many of Bangalow’s heritage buildings carry wall plaques sharing the stories of the businesses and families that once occupied them. A self-guided Bangalow Heritage Walk takes you through the highlights. The A&I Hall, built in 1911 for the annual Agriculture and Industrial Show, is one of the standout heritage structures.
Getting There from Ballina
Bangalow is about 30 minutes north of Ballina by car, an easy drive through the hinterland. It pairs well with a visit to Byron Bay (just 15 minutes further north) or the villages of Newrybar and Federal.
