Why Everyone Is Talking About the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

Why Everyone Is Talking About the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail has quickly become one of the most popular outdoor experiences in regional NSW, and it is easy to see why. Following the old Casino to Murwillumbah rail corridor through some of the most beautiful countryside in the state, this shared recreation trail is a must for anyone visiting the region, whether you are a keen cyclist, a casual walker or somewhere in between.

When fully completed, the trail will stretch 132 kilometres from Murwillumbah to Casino. Two sections are already open and drawing riders and walkers from across Australia.

The Northern Section: Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek (24 km)

This is the section that put the rail trail on the map. Starting from the heritage-listed Murwillumbah Railway Station, the trail winds 24 kilometres south through the Tweed Valley to Crabbes Creek, passing through the villages of Stokers Siding, Burringbar and Mooball along the way.

The scenery is spectacular. Rolling farmland, lush subtropical bush and sweeping views of Wollumbin (Mount Warning) unfold as you ride. The trail crosses 16 restored heritage railway bridges and passes through the 524-metre Burringbar Range Tunnel, home to glow worms and microbats. Bring a torch and dismount when passing through the tunnel to avoid disturbing the wildlife.

The surface is a mix of sealed and compact gravel, making it accessible for most bike types including e-bikes, though a gravel or hybrid bike will give you the most comfortable ride. There are some long, gentle inclines (think train-grade gradients) and the trail can get busy on weekends, so keep left and allow space for other users.

Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours each way on a pedal bike, or a little less on an e-bike. Factor in extra time for stops, because the villages along the route are worth lingering in. Mooball in particular has a great pub and a growing reputation as a foodie stop.

The Southern Section: Casino to Lismore (29.7 km)

The southern section stretches nearly 30 kilometres from Casino to Lismore, following the old rail corridor past open countryside, creek crossings and historic railway bridges. This section also features the Naughtons Gap Tunnel and a dedicated bridle pathway providing over 20 kilometres of track for horse riders.

It is a quieter ride than the northern section, with more open pastoral views and a different character. If you are based in Ballina, it is about 40 minutes to Lismore by car, making it an easy day trip.

E-Bike Hire on the Trail

You do not need to bring your own bike to enjoy the rail trail. Several hire operators are based right at the Murwillumbah trailhead, making it simple to turn up and ride.

Valley E-Bikes is a locally owned, solar-powered outfit offering fat-tyre e-bikes, cargo bikes for families with young kids, trikes and even pet trailers. They are based at the start of the trail and provide helmets, locks, trail maps and personalised local tips with every hire. Half-day and full-day options are available.

Better by Bike offers high-end Moustache e-bikes with everything you need included: helmets, gel seats, waterproof panniers and bike lights for the tunnel. They also run an optional shuttle service from Byron Bay and Tweed Coast accommodation, so you can ride one way and get picked up at the other end. They are currently offering 10% off when you book two or more e-bikes.

Pedals and Picnics combines e-bike hire with locally made grazing boxes and even luxury picnic setups along the trail. Their most popular package includes two premium e-bikes, a grazing box for two and a DIY picnic kit. They also run a Farmers Market Experience where you visit the Murwillumbah markets, choose your own produce and ride out with a custom grazing box.

Tips for Riding the Trail

Download the trail app or check the QR codes at each station for historical information about the stops along the way. Bring water as there are limited drinking fountains. Mobile signal drops out in some sections, so download any maps before you set off. The trail is a shared use path for walkers, cyclists and runners, so keep left, pass on the right and call out when overtaking. E-bikes are welcome but must comply with Australian standards (250W motor, 25km/h assist limit). Check northernriversrailtrail.com.au for the latest trail conditions and updates on new sections.
